Excess land is property that Caltrans originally acquired for a transportation project or other operational need such as a maintenance station. The property becomes excess when the Department determines that it will no longer be necessary for a transportation project or other operational need.

All auctions are open to the public and normally conducted either by an oral or sealed bid format. In most cases a minimum bid amount is set before the auction. Credit terms are available under certain circumstances. By statute, all sales are subject to final approval of the California Transportation Commission.
