Some government agencies sell items to the public through live and online auctions. These auctions let you buy government-owned assets from across the U.S. and its territories.
Lands identified as excess to the public's or government's needs are sometimes put up for sale. Land is first offered to other federal agencies and states and then becomes open for sale to the public.
The lands fall into two categories: real property and public land.
Open All +
This mainly consists of developed land with buildings. The property was usually acquired for a military base, office building, or other purpose. The General Services Administration (GSA) is in charge of selling developed surplus property.
Public land is undeveloped land with no improvements. It's usually part of the original public domain established during the western expansion of the United States. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) oversees this land.
